The late Richard Holmes gave some of his finest performances in this series. I directed two out of the four programmes, the first about the battle of Alamein in 1942, which opened the series and the concluding film about the tragic defeat at Arnhem. Shot on location in Egypt and Holland, the films included eyewitness accounts from surviving participants and some lavish drama reconstruction.
