ape-man: adventures in human evolution

episode 1: human

50' BBC2, 2000

This opening programme in a landmark series about the evolution of humans, concentrated at what makes us modern humans modern - our minds. Shot on lovely super 16mm film, it followed two South African archaeologists as they unravel the meaning and purpose of the oldest art in the world: the painted caves of Ice Age Europe. Filmed in medical labs in the UK and US, South African Rock-shelters, with hunter-gatherers in the Kalahari and in the crystalline depths of the painted caves themselves, it tells an extraordinary story of the first ancient stirrings of the artistic imagination.

Click here for my CAJ article which arose out of the controversy the archaeologists' thesis caused.
