Terry Jones' Barbarians
The End of the World
50' for BBC2, 2005
Around 400AD, two 'barbarians' were born; Attila the Hun and Gaiseric, the leader of the Vandals. Between them, they brought down the Roman empire in the West. Yet unusually in history, this time the story of the losers prevailed. For to us, of course, they are barbarians. But there was much more to it than that. The key to the success of the Romans' anti-barbarian propaganda as a whole is intimately wrapped up in the stories of the Huns and Vandals and the fall of the Western Empire. Python Terry Jones reveals how the Catholic Church rewrote history to smear the ancestors of modern Europe as barbarians.
